Part-Time Shelter Veterinarian

Summary: Las Vegas animal rescue/shelter seeks a part-time veterinarian to care for dogs, cats, and rabbits and help lead the organization toward progressive animal sheltering. No surgery required.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
• Engage in rounds three to five days a week.
• Provide exams, vaccines and basic veterinary care.
• Provide direction, guidance and training for shelter staff and volunteers.
• Create accurate medical records in shelter management system for actions performed, medications prescribed, and notes for staff to follow regarding any treatments.
• Prescribe medications as needed.
• Promote a caring attitude toward all animals and treat animals humanely and with compassion at all times, regardless of circumstances including those who are sick, injured, feral, or aggressive.
• Treat people (staff, volunteers, and the public) with respect and courtesy, foster a spirit of teamwork and perform duties in a manner that assists the organization in the achievement of its goals and encourages community support of its work.
• Work cooperatively with the executive director and care managers.

Physical requirements:
• Allergic conditions, which would be aggravated when handling or working with animals, may be a disqualification.
• Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary.

Qualifications:
• DVM or VMD degree from an accredited university with a Nevada license.
• An understanding that animals in shelters sometimes have different medical needs than animals seen in private practice.
• Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with staff and volunteers in a professional, pleasant, respectful, courteous, and tactful manner at all times.
• Maturity, good judgment, and professional personal appearance.
• Experience volunteering at or working in an animal shelter or TNR program is a plus.

HOURLY POSITION: Minimum of 10 hours per week; maximum of 20 hours per week. Generous compensation. There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer.
